Ajithkumar first got introduced into Tamil field through the film "Amaraavathy". His films like "Aasai", "Kaathal Kottai", "Vaali" and "Amarkkalam" were great hits. His recent release "Mugavari" is also performing well.

He, the most handsome eligible bachelor of Tamil film industry and she, petite, dainty and beautiful child-artist-turned-heroine. There couldn't have been a more 'made for each other' couple. She paired with Ajithkumar in "Amarkkalam". During then they fell in love with each other. Subsequently, both lovers' parents gave their consent and an engagement function was held.

The long awaited announcement of their marriage came at a press meet jointly called by Ajith and Shalini at GRT Granddays Hotel, Chennai. Ajith's parents Mr.P.S.Mani & Mrs.Mohini Mani and Shalini's father Mr. Babu were also present at the Press Conference

Ajith and Shalini are getting married on April 24, 2000 at Hotel Connemara, Chennai. They were waiting for the completion of Shalini's current film also staring prasanth, the Tamil remake of the Malayalam blockbuster Niram, which incidentally will be Shalini's 'swan song' also. .

"It will be a Civil marriage, a simple family affair but the traditional rituals of exchanging rings and garlands and tying the thali (mangalsoothr) will be there. For the marriage only his and her relation are invited. Next evening on 25th April there will be a reception at Hotel Connemara itself", informed Ajith, function is held in which all cine people and his fans come and convey their blessings and wishes to the couple.

At the Press Meet the chemistry and the love between the two were almost palpable. "Ours was not a 'love at first sight' sort of thing but a meeting of the minds. We started off as very good friends who understood each other perfectly well. She came into my life when I had nothing. She used to visit me in the hospital. She was a good listener, I could discuss all my problems with her. I could talk anything with her", recalled Ajith.

Shalini talking about leaving films after marriage said: "After marriage if both husband and wife continue in the same profession, especially in films, it'll definitely affect their home life. Their timings will clash. I don't want all that. Actually I never wanted to make acting my full time career. My intention was to study."

Ajith set to rest all baseless rumors about him converting into a Christian. "I will remain as myself and Shalini will be Shalini. When we have children we'll leave the choice of their religion to themselves. There will be no talk of religion in our home. I want to give Shalini all the happiness in the world. That is all I care about”, said the sensible Ajith

Ajith-Shalini have planned to distribute the marriage invitations to all V.I.P.s by themselves jointly going in person.
